Moving Strings – Splendor

Moving Strings is a collective of musicians, mainly stringed-instrument players, that investigates the boundaries between music, sound, movement and dance.

I already collaborated with them in two projects in the Vogelbuurt, and I had the pleasure to perform again with them in one of the pieces of the concert they organized in Splendor.

Five Seasons – New project

This project was started by Maryana Golovchenko. After she contacted me, we started working mainly on traditional melodies from Ukraine -where she comes from-, related to the seasons calendar. Soon after, Cengiz Arslanpay would join us with his modular synths and countless flutes. I add my eccentric cello playing to this trio with a mix of folk and experimental music.

Here the version of Grey Geese with guest Geerte de Koe on violin. It was recorded in Grote Kerk in Den Haag. During the commemoration of the remembrance day, 4th of May.

And here a more psychedelic approach to another traditional melody

Oude en Nieuw – Muziekgebouw

The ensemble Asko-Schoenberg organized quite an eclectic new year eve. A mix of contemporary music, jazz, pop, and a final DJ in the Muziekgebouw – produced together with the Bimhuis-.

The line up included the Asko-Schoenberg ensemble, the trio Janssen-Glerum-Janssen, Loes Haverkort & LOUIS V, David Kweksilber, and we participated with the AMOK septet.

It was great night!

Hadow/Sola at Pintotonics+1

Pintotonics+1 is a great night organized by Raoul van der Weide in Huis de Pinto, a very beautiful old house in the middle of Amsterdam, converted into a cultural place. These nights are always very special, with the combination of one solo and a small ensemble. I already played solo there once, and now it was the turn of our duo with George. Björk Níelsdóttir joined us in one of the songs.

This is what we say about ourselves: Ranging vastly from heavy searing fissure to the most delicate, the duo works very much from a rhythmical standpoint; a twisting, turning discombobulation to a breezing zephyr and back again.

With: George Hadow (drums), Björk Níelsdóttir (voice)

New Generation NTR – Tijn Wybenga

Thanks to Tijn’s Nieuwe Makers fond, I had the opportunity to collaborate with him and his band AMOK in many occasions the last two years.

NTR, a dutch tv channel (I think…) did an episode of New generation with him in dialogue with Martin Fondse. In that episode, we recorded some new tunes by Tijn with the AMOK orchestra.

Here the full concert (starting in a duo by me and Angelo Boltinin on electronics)

And here the episode:

With: Kika Sprangers sax, Alistair Payne trumpet, Federico Calcagno clarinet/bass clarinet, Salvoandrea Lucifora trombone, Luka Batista guitar, Freek Mulder bass, Tom Pritchard vibraphone, Felix Back keys, Margot Kolodziej violin, Pablo Rodriguez violin, Annemarie Hensens viola, Pau Sola cello, Angelo Boltini live electronics, Alex Brajkovic drums, Tijn Wybenga conductor

Laura Polence at Holysloot

That November I had the pleasure to play with Laura Polence’s quartet. Laura is an amazing Latvian singer and composer, I really love her music, fun, exciting, with a lot of humor and freedom. Holysloot is a very small village on the middle of the waterlands in the north of Amsterdam, really recommend to have a cycle ride to there!

Laura’s music with animation by Michael Landau. (I’m not on the recording)

With: Laura Polence (composition and voice), Lennart Heyndels (Bass), Onno Govaert (drums)

The Owlman – Zaal 100

The pianist Nico Chientaroli is the band leader of this flexible instrumental ensemble. Based on his open compositions, texts and conduction signs. I hope we can continue with this band very soon!

With: Nicolás Chientaroli (composition, direction, piano/synthesizer, voice); Onno Govaert (drums), Miguel Petruccelli (guitar, electric bass); Renato Ferreira (contrabass); Pau Sola (cello); Ziv Taubenfeld (bass clarinet); Hernán Samá (reeds).

Jazz at the Stork Club

Joanie Croes organizes this series of jazz (in a very broad sense) at the Stork Club in Amsterdam. An amazing living room in the middle of the red light district that open its doors for different cultural events. Joanie asked me to present something there, giving me complete freedom.

Together with Oene, Philipp, and Miri, we meet from time to time just to improvise and jam, and I thought it would be a great idea to open this completely free sessions to the an audience. It was a great evening!

With: Oene van Geel (viola), Philipp Rüttgers (synths), Miri Lee (dance).

Ig, Ab, George and I – Recording

For a couple of years already, Ig and I meet from time to time just to improvise and talk about music. She used to meet with George as well – for much longer already – so the three of us started having some meetings. During these gatherings, Ab would also join some times, either with clarinet or the shakuhachi. The sound of the shakuhachi with the three strings really stroke me, so together with George, we decided to do a recording.

This picture is the day we decided to do the recording. I hope I can update you very soon with the music!!

With: Ig Henneman (viola), Ab Baars (clarinet and shakuhachi), George Dumitriu (viola and violin).
